Vapor Intrusion & Brownfield Sites

An Emerging Issue in New York State updated 5/2/05

vapor intrusion figure from ITRC report
The Department made available for public comment a proposed program policy (8 page PDF, 75 kb) that outlines the Department’s strategy for evaluating the potential for vapor intrusion at sites where remedial decisions have already been made, sites that are currently being investigated and sites which will be reviewed by the Department in the future. The proposed policy states that vapor intrusion will be evaluated at every site that is currently being reviewed by NYSDEC as well as sites that will be reviewed in the future. For sites where remedial decisions have already been made, the strategy details a stepwise approach which prioritizes sites based on the greatest potential for vapor intrusion and will result in evaluation of the sites with the greatest potential first.  The comment deadline was December 24, 2004.  A final version of the policy and a responsiveness summary are expected to be issued by late January or early February 2005.  updated 1/20/05
