New York State Sites |
||
| New York State currently lacks any
formalized inventory of "brownfield" sites. Viewed most broadly, any
former or underutilized industrial or commercial property with known or
suspected environmental contamination could be considered a brownfield. The U.S. Conference of Mayors' third annual brownfields report (see "Relevant Brownfields Literature") included estimates by 11 participating New York cities of the number and sizes of brownfield sites in their jurisdictions. Numbers ranged from 1 (Rome, NY) to 6,000 (New York City), with a total of 6,223 sites and an average of 566 sites per City (22 sites per City if New York City is excluded). Sizes ranged from 17 acres (Binghamton, NY) to 4,000 acres (New York City), with a total acreage of 6,766 acres and an average of 615 acres per city (277 acres per city excluding New York City) and 12 acres per site (12.5 acres per site without New York City).
