Air Resources: regulates, permits and monitors sources
of air pollution; forecasts ozone and stagnation events; educates the public
about reducing air pollution; and researches atmospheric dynamics, pollution
and emission sources.
DEC Campgrounds/Recreation: manages 50 campgrounds in
the Adirondack and Catskill Parks and Belleayre Mountain Ski Center offering
opportunities to ski, camp, fish, swim and hike surrounded by the largest
wilderness areas in the eastern United States.
Environmental Education Camps: four DEC camps provide
opportunities for young men and women ages 12 to 17 to explore New York's
environment firsthand in fun and exciting ways.
Fish, Wildlife & Marine: protects and manages fish,
wildlife and marine species; provides for public use and enjoyment of
natural resources; stocks freshwater fish and pheasants; licenses fishing,
hunting and trapping; informs citizens about fish and wildlife issues;
provides hunter safety courses; protects and restores habitats; provides
public boat launches and fishing, hunting and trapping access.
Hudson River Estuary Program: unique regional
partnership designed to protect, conserve, restore, and enhance the
estuary’s productivity and diversity of natural resources to sustain a wide
array of present and future human benefits.
Mineral Resources: regulates and monitors the drilling
and production of oil, natural gas and solution salt; the underground
storage of natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas; and the extraction of
rocks and minerals, including reclamation of affected land.
Pesticide Information: the lead New York State agency in
regulating pesticides and is responsible for compliance assistance and
public outreach activities to ensure enforcement of State pesticide laws.
Pollution Prevention: promotes environmental management
strategies that avoid creating pollution at its source; provides technical
assistance and outreach through conferences, workshops, clearinghouses and
publications; coordinates DEC's integrated facility management program; and
coordinates the State Agency Environmental Audit Program
DEC Public Lands: acquires and maintains land for public
use; manages state forests and the Adirondack and Catskill forest preserves;
promotes use of public and private forest resources; and educates people
about forests
Waste Reduction & Recycling Program: encourages waste
reduction, reuse and recycling for solid and hazardous waste facilities.
Water: protects water quality in lakes, rivers, aquifers
and coastal areas by regulating wastewater discharges, monitoring
waterbodies and controlling surface runoff; manages the availability of
freshwater resources; helps communities prevent flood damage and beach
erosion; and, promotes water stewardship and education.
